Let’s talk bass pedals – what’s the difference between an overdrive and a distortion pedal?

Excellent question! An overdrive pedal gives the feeling of a tube amp being pushed as if it were turned up really loud (overdriving the amp). It provides light to moderate amounts of gain while keeping the tone clear. Typically used in blues, rock, and alternative rock.

Distortion, on the other hand, is what you hear in metal and death metal bands. It creates a very heavy and distorted tone, but takes away from the clarity of the guitar. Typically used in hard rock, metal, heavy metal, ect…

When talking about bass, I would go for an overdrive pedal because it would add some punch to your tone while keeping it very clear. Using a distortion pedal would just create a sonic mess when being used through a bass guitar rig. Leave the distortion to guitars.

In all honesty though, I have many friends that are bassists, all of which own overdrive pedals. They all say that guitar overdrive pedals (especially the ibanez ts-9 tube screamer) sound significantly better than bass overdrive pedals. My assumption is that using a guitar overdrive pedal adds gain to the higher end of the frequencies produced by a bass, while leaving the lower end still clear
