If she told you that “ma livre” meant my ruler she is not much of a French speaker. And these are not adjectives but possessive pronouns.
What you need to do is find out the translations of the nouns (pencils, chair etc) and with their translation will be either la, le or les (or n. f. – noun feminine / n. m. – noun masculine) this determines the gender of the pronoun, if the noun is plural (pencils) that will alter the pronoun.
